The BOON ideology.

We believe in community. We believe that the people, passions and things that bring us together in person should be nurtured and celebrated. That’s why we started BOON. To help ensure that whatever local community you love, gets the financial support it needs to thrive.

Traditional fundraising can be hard; here at BOON we want to make it easy. Imagine an ongoing revenue stream for your school/club that requires no set up costs, minimal time, and is inclusive to all members of your community.

It’s that simple with the BOON app. Billions of pounds are spent each year on secondhand goods and we’re here to filter some of that spending back into your communities. Everyone has items they no longer need and BOON makes it easy to sell them to members of your own community, making money for both you and the community. It’s a win-win-win situation for buyers, sellers and the community overall.

How does it work?

Using BOON is simple and free for both the school/club and for its members, following a few easy steps, once your group admin has signed up:

  1. The administrators of your Boon Community will provide you with a unique PIN which identifies your community. Simply download the Boon Fundraising app, enter the PIN and register as a user.
  2. As a seller, you list items for sale and chooses the percentage of the sale to be donated to the school/club.
  3. Buyers browse the listings, make purchases via the app and arrange to meet the seller to hand over the item(s).
  4. Payments are processed securely online and both the seller and club/school receive payments directly into their bank accounts.

… Everyone is happy and it really couldn’t be simpler.

Is my data secure?

Yes! We take the handling of personal data extremely seriously and have invested in secure systems to store your precious data safely. The Boon mobile app has been developed with data security at the fore of all considerations, leaving you safe to buy, sell and donate on Boon.

Help For Sellers

How do I add an item?

You can very easily add an item for sale by clicking the blue “+” symbol at the centre bottom of the screen. The next steps are very simple and intuitive, just ensure you complete all the information requested, including the ‘category’ at the very start of the listing process.

What items can I sell on the BOON app?

Anything and everything – well… within reason, of course (see prohibited item list below). The most popular items will be those that match the needs of your BOON community members. For example, items sold within school groups might include school uniforms, toys and games, kids’ bikes/scooters/skateboards, sporting equipment, books, musical instruments … the list goes on. Just ensure the items you list are in great condition – we want both sellers and buyers to be happy with every sale.

Prohibited items – adult products (sex related products), alcohol, drugs, animals, hazardous goods, medical or healthcare products, digital products or subscriptions, services or non-physical products, tobacco products, stolen goods, third party infringement products, weapons, ammunition or explosives, gift cards or vouchers.

What % goes to my school/club?

It’s really up to you. BOON’s primary goal is to generate funds for your local community. Whilst there will be a minimum donation set to achieve this goal, you may choose to increase your donation to anything up to 100% of the sale price if you’re feeling particularly generous.

How do I edit or delete my item?

Editing or deleting your listing is very simple.

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Click “Items” in the options at the bottom of the screen
  3. Click “My items for sale”
  4. Swipe left on the item you wish to edit or delete

Video Demonstration

How do I mark an item as sold?

When your sale is completed on the BOON app, your item will automatically be identified as sold and will be removed from live listings. If you would like to remove a live listed item, simply delete it via your account or edit the item and then change the option “Show as live listing?” to “NO”.

Why ask for my bank details?

When you list your first item for sale, we will ask for your bank account number and sort code. This information is only used to deposit monies following the successful sale of an item.

We will not ask for this information again unless you delete it and then wish to sell another item. You can edit your bank account details at any time via the profile area on the BOON app.

How to change bank details?

You may need to change your bank account details, here’s how;

  1. Click ‘Profile’ in the bottom right corner
  2. Click ‘Bank Details’ in the options presented

Are my bank details safe on BOON?

Yes! We take the handling of personal data extremely seriously and have invested in secure systems to store your precious data safely. With regards to your bank account details and payment card details, we do not store those, they are encrypted and stored by Stripe (our payment processor). For more details – https://stripe.com/docs/security/stripe

Why do you ask for payment card?

All sales through BOON are via payment card. This means we can quickly get payment to the seller and process their donations to your school/community group. The first time you buy an item within the BOON app you will be asked for your payment card details. These details are safely encrypted and stored by our payment processor Stripe for future purchases. BOON does not receive or store any of your financial data.

How do I change payment card details?

Simply log into your profile page and click on ‘Payment method’. Enter your new card details and then ‘Save changes’.

When will I receive my money?

At the time of completing a purchase, the buyer is asked to make full payment immediately. Your funds will be available to withdraw from this time. Simply click on ‘Profile’ and there will will see the funds available to withdraw, less your donation to the community. Press the ‘Withdraw funds’ button, and our payment provider will send the monies into your bank account. PLEASE NOTE: Our payment provider charges 20p + 0.35% each time you withdraw funds. Therefore, if you withdraw a small amount, the fees are a greater percentage of the overall amount. We recommend saving up funds in your Boon account and only make a withdrawal once a reasonable balance is achieved. e.g. Withdrawing £5 will cost you 22p, however, withdrawing £50 will only cost 38p.

Can I accept cash for an item?

Afraid not. Our number one goal at BOON is to raise money for your school/club. We automatically transfer a donation from each sale directly into their account and provide them with records of all donations. Transactions and cash sales outside of the BOON app prevent us from giving the much-needed donations to your school/club and are therefore not allowed.

Do I post sold items?

BOON is a local community marketplace so all users should be physically close to you and be a member of your chosen school/club. We encourage the exchange of goods in person – it’s cheaper, less hassle, better for the environment and helps build community. Following a successful sale in the app, contact the buyer and arrange a convenient place to meet – your house, their house, the school gates, the clubhouse, or even outside the local supermarket.

Do I have to refund a buyer?

No, you don’t. Users of the BOON app contractually agree that all purchases are made with the understanding that there are no refunds.

As a seller you need to make sure the buyer knows what they are getting. They might even ask to view the item in person before committing to the purchase. The more you can help here, the more likely everyone is to be happy.

If you need help, firstly contact your group admin – Open the app and click the ‘Messages’ menu option at the bottom of the screen, Admin will appear at the top of the list of contacts. Should your admin be unable to resolve the issue, please email support@boonfundraising.com.

My item for sale has been deleted.

Listings can be taken down for a variety of reasons. To contact your group admin for more details, open the app and click the ‘Messages’ menu option at the bottom of the screen.

Why is min donation 50%?

For items listed at £5 or less, we set a minimum donation of 50%. This is because there are transaction fees associated with every item sold and we need to ensure the school/club don’t lose money on small transactions.

Is there a minimum sale price?

Yes, there is a minimum sale price of £1. Please bear in mind that there is a minimum donation of 50% on all items priced £5 and less to ensure that the school’s transaction fees are covered.

What fees do BOON charge?

Our BOON app and website platform is subscription free to all groups and users. BOON will take a 5% transaction fee from each successful sale to cover the running costs of the BOON app and website and ensuring its security and performance. Credit card companies will also charge a small transaction fee. Please check our terms & conditions for full details.

I'd like to post a "Wanted" advert.

At the moment we don’t have a wanted section of the app. This is in development for a future version, until then you can work around this;

Create a new advert but add “WANTED” at the start of your item title. Make it very clear in the description that it’s a “WANTED” advert and you are looking to buy an item, rather than sell something. Price your item at a low price and encourage users to contact you via the messaging function of the app.

Help For Buyers

What % goes to my school/club?

It’s really up to you. BOON’s primary goal is to generate funds for your local community. Whilst there will be a minimum donation set to achieve this goal, sellers can decide how much of the sale price goes to the school/club. If you see an item listed for sale, you’ll see the sale price and next to it, the size of the donation going to the community.

Are card details safe with BOON?

All card transactions on the BOON app are processed using Stripe. Stripe is the world’s leading card processing company and treat data security with the utmost respect. You couldn’t be in safer hands. Details of Stripe’s privacy and security policies can be found here https://stripe.com/privacy-center/legal

Can I pay cash for an item?

Sorry, cash payments are not accepted as we are unable to process these transactions to provide the donations your school/club need. Card payments through BOON are processed by Stripe and are completely safe.

Inappropriate item for sale.

Let us know! We constantly monitor items but if you spot an inappropriate listing that has bypassed our scrutiny, click the ‘Report advert’ button which appears at the bottom of each listing. We appreciate your help.

I want a refund for an item I bought.

All users of the BOON app contractually agree that purchases are made with the understanding that there are no refunds.

As a buyer, if you are unsure whether a particular item is suitable, we suggest firstly messaging the seller so they can answer your questions. If you are still not sure then arrange with the seller to view the item in person. You must be 100% certain you wish to purchase the item before you commit, so check it carefully for size, condition, etc. before completing payment.

If you feel a seller has been intentionally misleading, report them to your group admin by clicking the ‘Messages’ menu option at the bottom of your screen. Members who abuse BOON will be removed by the admin.

How do I arrange collection of an item?

As soon as an item is paid for via the app, the seller will be sent an automated message asking them to contact you. Between yourself and the seller, arrangements can be made for a suitable time and location to exchange the item. If you wish to initiate this conversation, please use the BOON app messaging functionality. Log in, select ‘Items’ from the bottom menu, click on ‘Purchases’, find the correct item, and then click ‘Message’.

Best Practices & Top Tips

Listing an item.

Most people will view your listing on a mobile phone screen – it therefore needs to be concise and catchy whilst providing all the necessary details.

Getting your description right

Create an eye-catching headline, which titles the item correctly. Follow this with an accurate description, including the condition of the item. A perfect item description is clear enough to tell your buyer what they need to know at a scan, and yet detailed enough so that there can be no confusion around exactly what they’re buying.

Setting your price

Select your sale price carefully. Consider the value of the item when it was new, how old it is and its current condition. It may also be worth searching the internet to find similar items for sale elsewhere. BOON’s goal is to help your community; therefore, it is good practice to set your sale price slightly lower so others may benefit.

Donation %

This is what BOON’s all about and where your generosity shines. By default, a minimum percentage of your sale price will be donated to your school/club. However, you may decide to increase this up to a maximum of 100%. Whatever percentage you choose, remember it all helps!

Handover of purchased items.

Congratulations, you’ve successfully sold your item, but what now?

All buyers and sellers within your BOON community are likely to live within your area or share a common venue around which your community is built – the school, club or group. Therefore exchanging goods is simple, by arranging a convenient time to meet at your community venue, at the buyer or seller’s home or at a mutually agreed location. The BOON app includes a great messaging function, allowing members to communicate, making for easy co-ordination. Handover in person is not only great for the environment and the wallet, reducing postage and packaging, but it will also give you a chance to make new connections within your community.

Dispute resolution.

All buyers using the BOON app agree to purchase items, understanding that returns and refunds are not offered. The seller is not obliged to issue a refund, so please do not ask for one.

If you feel the listing was misleading or the item was defective beyond your knowledge, contact the group admin via the messaging function within the app.

Withdrawing funds.

Once you complete a sale, your funds will be registered in your user account. Don’t withdraw them straight away. As with all banking services, our payment provider charges you each and every time you transfer funds from Boon into your bank account. Charges are 20p + 0.35% each time you make a withdrawal, therefore, if you withdraw a small amount, the fees are a greater percentage of the overall amount. We recommend saving up funds in your Boon account and only make a withdrawal once a reasonable balance is achieved. e.g. Withdrawing £5 will cost you 22p, however, withdrawing £50 will only cost 38p.
